UN Concerns Over Bersih 3.0 Crackdown

United Nations special rapporteur for freedom of assembly and association Maina Kiai yesterday expressed "utmost concern" over crackdowns on peaceful assemblies in Malaysia.

Malaysia was specifically mentioned by the rapporteur during the 20th session of the UN Human Rights Council yesterday.

"The special rapporteur expresses his utmost concern in relation to peaceful assemblies that were either not allowed or violently dispersed in a number of countries, such as in Bahrain, Belarus, China, Egypt, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Malawi, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and the Syrian Arab Republic," the UN said yesterday.

Malaysia wins seat in Unesco

PARIS: Malaysia was elected to the Unesco executive board with the highest number of votes in its group last night, capping a week of major achievements.

Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein obtained 147 votes to grab one of the six seats in the Asia-Pacific group when the results were announced.

The five other countries were South Korea (139 votes), the Philippines (137), Sri Lanka (130), Mongolia (107) and Pakistan (106).

Ten countries including Malaysia vied for the six seats in that group. Iran, Afghanistan and Nauru lost in the elections while Bangladesh pulled out of the contest.

Obviously the competition wasn't all that stiff. But still. The man is repulsive!

Hishammuddin will serve a four-year term in the 58-member executive board from 2008.

The elections were held during the world body’s 34th general conference here.

Malaysia last held the post between 2000 and 2003 when Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, the then education minister, polled the highest number of 163 votes in the 1999 elections.

Now I know why he was waving that keris around. It was for CULTURAL reasons.

International Day of Non-Violence

The United Nations General Assembly today decided to observe the International Day of Non-Violence each year on 2 October – the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who helped lead India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.

Non-violence.

It should apply to Malaysian police, for starters.
